Meet the Executive Team
Tom Bair
CEO and Founder
Tom Bair grew up in the Central Valley farming town of Gustine. In his early years in Northern California, Tom hauled hay, saved his money and put himself through college by working at the local creamery. While there, he did everything from make cheese to load the trucks, getting his first taste of the food industry and the particulars of food safety and quality control.
After graduating from CSU Stanislaus with a degree in Business Administration, Tom put his marketing concentration to work at Gallo Wine. While there, he had the revelation that “there’s always a future in trucking” and began his next adventure. He earned a two-year transportation degree from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. Tom worked in the industry through its deregulation in 1983, worked hard and learned where improvements could be made. In 1989, Tom struck out on his own. After years in partnership, Tom founded Golden State Freight in 2002 with a focus on intermodal freight transport and customer service.
“I guess I’m known for my passion and intensity. I’ve always been competitive by nature, so when I entered the trucking industry I learned that these life-long qualities suited the trucking demand.”
Will Mayo
Chief Financial Officer
Originally from Cullman, Alabama, Will started in the transportation industry as a child - in fact, trucking has been his blood his whole life. He has followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. Will’s grandfather drove a truck for sixty years. Throughout high school Will worked at Garrison Logistics (formerly named R.E. Garrison) doing odd jobs around the office and shop.
Will went on to attend Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama where he majored in Supply Chain Management, which was part of the Raymond J. Harbert College of Business. Throughout college Will worked in a feed store, where he gained valuable retail experience that serves him to this day.
After graduating, Will returned to the trucking and logistics industry with J.B. Hunt in their Dedicated Contract Services division. His first assignment was as an Operations Supervisor in one of the Local Distribution Centers for Whirlpool Appliances in Memphis, where he managed freight received from the regional distribution center. He was responsible for routing the deliveries to the local stores and residential customers as well as managing the drivers on that account. After gaining extensive experience managing drivers and trucks, J.B. Hunt relocated him to Birmingham, Alabama at the Home Depot Distribution Center, where he managed freight shipped from the Distribution Center to stores throughout the Southeast.
From J.B. Hunt he transitioned back to R.E. Garrison, where he wore several hats including management of the AP & AR departments for the brokerage division and third party brokerage agent relationships management, amongst other tasks. From R.E. Garrison Trucking, Will took the opportunity to relocate to California where he had accepted a job at G3 Enterprises in Modesto, which is an extension of Gallo Wines. He worked in international logistics where he gained critical experience working with international ports, intermodal transportation, and systems management. From G3 Enterprises, Will decided to return to the trucking industry in a leadership role at Golden State Freight, where he works closely in all facets of the operations, administrative, and customer service.
